According to Al Jazeera, United States President Donald Trump said he cancelled a planned large-scale military attack on Iran after claiming that the “perimeters of a deal” had been agreed upon. Trump announced the decision late Saturday on his Truth Social platform, saying Iran and other Middle East countries had asked him to hold off an attack.

Trump said he agreed to delay action on the condition that an agreement be concluded quickly. He said the arrangement would bring the “Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT” and end what he called “Iran’s nuclear threat”. There was no immediate response from Tehran to Trump’s announcement.

The decision followed reports by US media a day earlier that Washington and Israel were preparing to strike Iran’s energy infrastructure. Trump had said on Friday that the United States would hit Iran “very hard”. Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told his Saudi counterpart that any US or Israeli attack would receive a “proportionate response”.

Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called Trump on Saturday and urged him to cancel the strikes and return to negotiations, citing a source familiar with the matter. Separately, the US Department of State issued security alerts for Americans in 10 countries in the region, urging increased caution and advising them to consider leaving because of escalating tensions.
