According to Al Jazeera, United States President Donald Trump said Israel has an “understanding” with the US over a newly announced agreement involving Hamas disarmament, despite Israel not yet agreeing publicly to its terms. Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David in Maryland, Trump said Israel was “very happy” and had helped with the arrangement.

Trump said the agreement could face “ups and down” because the situation remained “complex”, while describing it as a “great breakthrough”. Hamas had confirmed hours earlier that it agreed to the first step of a deal intended to bring Israel’s war in Gaza to a complete end. The arrangement would involve Hamas handing its weapons to a Palestinian committee in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Israel has largely remained silent. Far-right Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called the plan “unacceptable to Israel”, while Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said Israel would support only a deal ensuring Hamas could not use the weapons again. The preliminary agreement followed a meeting of mediators from Egypt, Qatar, Turkiye and the US.

Under the plan, Hamas is to prepare an inventory of weapons over 14 days, with possible extensions. An International Stabilization Force and a new Palestinian police force would oversee their transfer to a Palestinian National Committee for storage and monitoring, while Israeli forces would incrementally withdraw. Questions remain over the withdrawal, the force’s deployment and Gaza’s redevelopment. Al Jazeera reported that no specific deadlines have been set for the weapons transfer or Israeli withdrawal, and that Israel would need to approve several stages of the security process.
