US President Donald Trump has ordered federal agencies to cease using technology developed by AI company Anthropic. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!” This directive follows a dispute between the company and the White House regarding access to Anthropic’s AI tools by the US military. According to BBC News, Anthropic’s refusal to comply with military demands led to US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth labeling the company as a “supply chain risk.”

The designation would mark Anthropic as the first US company to receive such treatment publicly. In response, Anthropic announced plans to challenge the supply chain risk designation in court. The company expressed concerns about the potential use of its AI tools in mass surveillance and autonomous weapons systems, which the Pentagon has insisted must be permitted under any agreements.

Trump’s directive will initiate a phase-out of Anthropic’s tools from all government work over the next six months. The company indicated that the only impact would be on clients that also contract with the military, which may need to cease using Anthropic’s products for military-related tasks. Before Trump’s announcement, Anthropic had indicated its willingness to facilitate a smooth transition to alternative providers if the Department of Defense chose to stop using its tools.

In a strong rebuke, Trump warned Anthropic to “get their act together” during the transition period or face significant consequences. The company has been involved with the US government and military since 2024, being the first advanced AI firm to deploy its tools for classified work. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman expressed support for Anthropic, aligning with its stance against the military’s demands regarding AI safeguards. Altman noted shared concerns about military applications that are unlawful or unsuitable for deployment.

The ongoing conflict between Anthropic and the US government highlights significant issues surrounding the ethical use of AI technology in military operations. As the situation unfolds, the implications for both the AI industry and government contracts remain to be seen.
