According to Cnbc, President Donald Trump has created a three-person committee of inquiry to recommend whether he has cause to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over mortgage fraud allegations that she denies.

Cook is expected to attend a White House hearing on Nov. 5 and may bring an attorney. Under Trump’s memo, the committee will consider the evidence and her response, while Cook will have until Nov. 10 to provide follow-up material. The panel will then make a recommendation, with no deadline set for Trump’s final decision.

The committee includes National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, acting Office of Government Ethics Director and Labor secretary Keith Sonderling, and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chair Andrea R. Lucas. All three are Trump appointees. The committee cannot remove Cook itself, and its members are executive branch appointees rather than impartial judicial officials.

Trump ordered Cook fired in 2025, but the Supreme Court blocked that effort on procedural grounds while saying he could try again. The court said Cook must receive notice, an explanation of the evidence and an opportunity to defend herself. It did not define in detail what would constitute cause for removal.

Cook’s attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, said she welcomes the chance to present facts and show there is no legal basis to fire her, while expressing doubts that the hearing would conform to the law. If Trump removes Cook following the process, the decision would likely prompt another court fight.
