United States President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Oman if the country engages in discussions with Iran regarding control of the Strait of Hormuz. This warning was issued during a cabinet meeting at the White House, reflecting the escalating tensions surrounding shipping access to the vital waterway.

According to Al Jazeera, Trump stated, “Nobody is going to control it,” referring to the strait, which is crucial for global oil transportation. His comments followed reports that Oman was in talks with Iran about overseeing maritime passage through the strait, which handles more than 20 percent of the world’s global oil traffic.

Despite the strait being recognized as a natural waterway, much of it lies within Iranian and Omani territorial waters. Trump’s remarks came as tensions heightened following a joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which had previously resulted in Iran asserting more control over the waterway.

Iran’s state media reported that an agreement between Oman and Iran was nearing completion, allowing for joint control of the strait. However, the Trump administration dismissed these claims and expressed concern over any potential normalization of Iranian influence in the region.

Critics of Trump’s comments have labeled them reckless, with some likening his threats to those of a mafia boss. They argue that such statements could undermine regional stability, especially given Oman’s role as a mediator in past US-Iran negotiations. As military tensions continue to rise, the implications of Trump’s threat remain a focal point of concern for both regional and global observers.
