According to BBC News, US President Donald Trump said he had cancelled planned strikes against Iran, provided a deal could be reached “rapidly”. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the proposed agreement would require the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he called “Iran’s nuclear threat”.

Trump said the decision was taken alongside Israel. He wrote that the US was “locked and loaded and ready to go” against Iran, but had been asked by Iran and other Middle Eastern countries to hold off to allow time for an agreement. He also said the “perimeters of a deal has been agreed to”. Iran had not responded to the announcement.

The statement followed US media reports that Washington could have been preparing intense new strikes on Iran over the weekend. Multiple sources told CBS News that the US and Israel had been planning a major bombing campaign targeting Iranian energy infrastructure, and that the plan was discussed during Trump’s cabinet meeting on Friday.

Washington and Tehran have exchanged strikes and counter-strikes since a ceasefire intended to pause the war broke down in June. The US said earlier this week that it had completed a “heavy wave” of strikes in response to an attempted ballistic missile attack on American forces. US authorities have also urged Americans in the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance and prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruption.
