U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of “winding down” military operations in Iran, despite the recent deployment of 2,500 additional marines to the region. In a social media post, Trump stated that the U.S. is “getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East.” According to Al Jazeera, this announcement comes against a backdrop of rising oil prices and a request for more funding from Congress to support the ongoing war.

The mixed messages from the Trump administration have raised questions about the war’s duration and objectives. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that it may take approximately four to six weeks to achieve the mission’s goals, but clarity on the endgame has been lacking since the conflict began on February 28. Meanwhile, U.S.-Israeli forces have intensified their attacks on Iranian targets, coinciding with the Persian New Year celebrations in Iran.

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with more than 1,400 reported deaths in Iran and more than 1,000 in Lebanon due to Israeli bombings. The ongoing hostilities have also led to Iranian missile strikes against U.S. military bases, including a reported attack on the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean.

As the situation evolves, Trump maintains that he has no intention of sending ground troops into Iran while affirming that all options remain on the table. Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has claimed that the U.S.-Israeli war is a “gross miscalculation,” emphasizing the resilience of the Iranian people amid the conflict.
