An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 has struck in the sea about 110 kilometres south-west of Hihifo, Tonga, the United States Geological Survey says.
A tsunami advisory was issued for American Samoa and the earthquake could soon also affect nearby coasts, Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said on Monday morning.
The quake was at a depth of 36 kilometres, the USGS said.
Monday’s quake came nearly a year after a massive undersea volcanic eruption triggered waves up to 15 metres high and inflicted enormous damage on Tonga.
Several people were killed by the impact of the eruption and subsequent tremors.
