According to Allafrica, trade between Tunisia and Spain could double in the coming years if the current trend continues, Spain’s Ambassador to Tunisia, Isidro Antonio Gonzalez Afonso, said in an interview with TAP. Spain is Tunisia’s fourth-largest trading partner in Europe, and the ambassador said a new dynamic is emerging in economic relations between the two countries.

Gonzalez Afonso said Spanish companies are showing growing interest in the Tunisian market and are increasingly choosing to establish operations in the country across several sectors. He identified tourism, agriculture and renewable energy as promising areas for cooperation and investment, describing Tunisia as an attractive market for Spanish businesses.

The presence of Spanish companies in Tunisia is expected to grow, particularly in tourism, as well as agriculture and renewable energy. Spain has established expertise in tourism, including internationally known hotel groups and chains, and some major players are interested in investing in Tunisia, the ambassador said.

He said stronger bilateral cooperation could also support the development of air links, facilitating travel and increasing tourist flows. Current flight connections are insufficient, he said, adding that the Tunisian and Spanish governments are working on a project to significantly increase airport slots allocated to airlines and strengthen services between the two countries.

The arrival of major Spanish tourism groups could encourage other operators, including travel agencies and airlines, to follow, Gonzalez Afonso said. Such investment and improved air connections could raise visitor numbers to Tunisia, drawing tourists not only from Spain but also from other European countries and other parts of the world.
