Arabic version: تركيا تحزن بعد إطلاق نار في المدرسة يودي بحياة شباب
A tragic school shooting in Türkiye has left the nation in mourning, as nine people, including eight pupils and a teacher, were killed by a 14-year-old student at a middle school in Kahramanmaras. This incident marks a grim first for the country, which has faced numerous disasters but never a mass killing in an educational setting. According to SBS News, the shooting occurred in a city that had already suffered greatly from a devastating earthquake earlier this year.
The funeral for four of the young victims drew more than a thousand mourners, with families and friends expressing their profound grief. Vezir Yucel, the father of one of the survivors, shared the heartbreak of losing a child in such a violent manner. “Our grief is endless. These children were like our own. They were all innocent,” he said, as he held his son close during the memorial service.
The impact of the tragedy has resonated deeply across the country. Many attendees at the funeral were struck by the fact that the slain children had already endured significant trauma from the February earthquake, which had claimed around 60,000 lives in Türkiye and neighboring Syria. Leyla Naz Kurtgoz, a student who attended the funeral, expressed that such violence should never befall children.
Outside the mosque where the victims were honored, the sight of young coffins draped in Turkish flags was heart-wrenching. One father, who sat silently beside his daughter’s coffin, epitomized the sorrow felt by many in the community. As prayers were recited, the atmosphere was thick with despair, with one young man commenting on the cumulative toll of recent tragedies on the community’s mental health.
The incident has raised fears among educators and parents, with concerns that it could inspire further violence. As the city mourns, the community grapples with the aftermath of this unprecedented act, hoping to find solace in shared grief and remembrance.
