For people who are into spirituality and who are not too offended when the afterlife is discussed and, in a way, humorously criticized, The Good Place is an absolute must watch. The series begins when Eleanor, a self-proclaimed horrible person, wakes up in an office and gets told by Michael, the good place architect, that she has had an accident and has been such a good person in her life that she ended up in the good place aka heaven. Eleanor quickly realizes that a mistake has been made and that she should not belong there and that all the “good deeds” that earned her place there were not actually hers.
Eleanor confides in her assigned soul mate Chidi as soon as she has the chance, and she asks for his help in both keeping her secret as well as helping her become a good person worthy of the good place. Being an Ethics professor, Chidi could not resist helping Eleanor by teaching her a crash course in ethics, including all the dilemmas and dichotomies that philosophers all over the world have debated for ages. Eleanor also meets her neighbors Tahani, a philanthropist millionaire and her soulmate Jianyu, a Taiwanese monk with a vow of silence.
With beautifully designed characters and a funny yet sophisticated storyline, The Good Place is a great series to watch. Moreover, episodes are bite-sized with each episode being around 20 minutes, so it doesn’t get boring. However, the most interesting thing about it starts in the second half of the first season when things start making even more interesting sense in the spiritual sense.
Another good thing about The Good Place is the season finale. Without any spoilers, we can say one thing about it: it makes sense… beautiful sense. It puts everything into perspective and helps in aligning many philosophies and spiritual paths. Whatever religion you belong to, watch The Good Place!
