According to ABC News, a man and a woman were shot by police during an altercation in Mount Sheridan, a suburb of Cairns, in far north Queensland.

Authorities were called to an address shortly after 5pm following reports of a man armed with knives.

Police said officers attempted to engage the man before he was shot. A woman was also shot during the altercation.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said both people were taken to Cairns Hospital. They were in a stable condition.
