Arabic version: رئيس الأركان البريطاني يحذر من مستويات تهديد غير مسبوقة
The UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Sir Richard Knighton, has stated that the country is currently facing its most dangerous period since the Cold War. In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he emphasized that the risks and threats to the UK are greater than ever, citing an increase in incursions by Russian strategic aircraft into UK airspace.
According to BBC News, Sir Richard highlighted that the number of such incursions in the first five months of 2023 has already matched the total for all of 2025. He warned that Russia is at risk of “crossing a line” with its aggressive actions.
The Chief of Defence Staff also referenced last year’s Strategic Defence Review as a “call to arms,” indicating a shift in focus for the armed forces from short, contained conflicts to preparing for prolonged engagements, similar to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. His comments come as the UK government prepares to release its Defence Investment Plan, which will outline funding for new military equipment and infrastructure over the next decade.
Defence Secretary John Healey has indicated that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is committed to publishing this plan before the upcoming NATO summit on July 7. Sir Richard expressed confidence that the government is aware of the military’s funding needs and is working to increase spending. He noted the importance of making difficult trade-off decisions to enhance the UK’s defense capabilities.
Furthermore, Sir Richard discussed the evolving nature of warfare, stating that drones and autonomous systems are expected to play a crucial role in future conflicts. He reiterated the urgency for society to recognize the current threats, suggesting that it may necessitate different choices and priorities moving forward. He concluded by stating that Russia is escalating its probing of the UK’s military defenses through both traditional and non-traditional means, including cyberattacks and sabotage.
