Arabic version: تغييرات جوازات السفر البريطانية تترك عائلة أسترالية في حالة من عدم اليقين
An Australian family of four is experiencing significant anxiety as they navigate new entry laws for the United Kingdom. According to SBS News, these regulations now require dual citizens of Australia and the UK to possess a valid UK passport to enter the country, even if they hold an Australian passport.
Gemma, a dual Australian and UK citizen, has booked a family holiday to the UK and Sweden in July. However, the new rules have complicated her travel plans, as her children, who are British citizens by descent, now need UK passports. She submitted their applications along with their original passports and other vital documents back in January, costing her around $400. “I’m really uneasy now because after sending those passports overseas, we can’t travel anywhere while we wait,” Gemma expressed.
The British High Commission has acknowledged a surge in inquiries from Australians regarding the changes. Many are concerned about whether their children born in Australia require British passports and the timeline for receiving them. According to the Commission, the typical processing time for passport applications from Australia is about four weeks, although this can vary depending on individual circumstances.
Gemma’s worries extend beyond the timeline; she fears the potential loss of her submitted documents. After sending in her children’s birth certificates and her marriage certificate to prove their British descent, she was informed that the passport office could not locate them. “My parents are terrified they won’t get those documents back,” she said. If the new passports are not received in time, Gemma may consider traveling to the UK regardless, but she is apprehensive about the risks involved.
