Arabic version: المملكة المتحدة ترفع مستوى تهديد الإرهاب بعد طعن غولدرز غرين
The UK government has elevated its terrorism threat level from “substantial” to “severe,” indicating that a terrorist attack is highly likely in the next six months. This decision follows a double stabbing incident in Golders Green, north London, which the Metropolitan Police has classified as a terrorist act. According to BBC News, the government noted that the increase was not solely due to the recent attack but also reflects a rise in threats from both Islamist and extreme right-wing groups.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed concern for the Jewish community, who have been disproportionately affected by a series of recent attacks. She emphasized the government’s commitment to combating antisemitism and announced additional funding for policing and security measures around Jewish sites. Mahmood urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.
The suspect in the Golders Green attack, Essa Suleiman, 45, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has a previous connection to the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy, having been referred to the Prevent program in 2020. Police are investigating his potential involvement in an earlier incident in southeast London.
The threat level had previously been raised to severe in February 2022 but was lowered later that year. The current threat assessment highlights a growing concern over violence against Jewish individuals and institutions in the UK, with police noting an increase in ideologically motivated threats.
In response to the raised threat level, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan announced the deployment of additional police forces, including armed officers, across the capital. Security Minister Dan Jarvis reassured citizens that intelligence and law enforcement agencies are working diligently to ensure public safety. The government has allocated an extra £25 million for enhanced security in Jewish communities, which will also support protective measures around synagogues and community centers.
