Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa have announced a commitment to enhance security cooperation between their nations. This agreement comes as Ukraine seeks to share its military expertise with countries in the Middle East, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts involving Iran.

Zelenskyy made the announcement following his meeting with al-Sharaa in Damascus, marking his first visit to the Syrian capital since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in 2024. According to Al Jazeera, the leaders emphasized the importance of exchanging military and security experience to foster development and security for their societies.

The backdrop to this cooperation is the ongoing conflict that has seen Iran and allied groups attacking U.S. and Israeli targets, as well as those in Gulf countries, utilizing advanced missile and drone technology. Ukraine’s experience in countering drone attacks, developed during its protracted conflict with Russia, positions it as a valuable partner in regional security efforts.

Zelenskyy’s diplomatic outreach has included recent visits to Gulf nations, where he signed long-term military cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia and Qatar. During his discussions with al-Sharaa, he also highlighted Ukraine’s role as a reliable grain supplier and explored opportunities to enhance food security in the region.

Additionally, Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Zelenskyy and al-Sharaa in Damascus, signaling broader regional engagement in security discussions. Zelenskyy’s efforts to strengthen ties with Middle Eastern nations reflect Ukraine’s strategic interests in bolstering its military alliances and economic partnerships amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
