The governing board of the United Nations nuclear watchdog has passed a United States-backed resolution demanding Iran provide “complete information” on its enriched uranium stocks and grant access to inspectors to verify them. This resolution passed with 21 votes in favor, while three members voted against it and ten abstained, according to Al Jazeera.

The resolution came on Wednesday during escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, following a series of strikes exchanged after the U.S. accused Tehran of downing an Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz. This situation marks the most significant escalation since a ceasefire was established in April, which had temporarily halted weeks of attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran.

Iran has condemned the resolution, asserting that it could hinder ongoing efforts to end the war. Iranian officials have characterized the resolution as politically motivated and legally flawed, warning that it complicates the already tense negotiations between Iran and the U.S. regarding the ceasefire and broader discussions on Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, criticized the resolution as an attempt to shift blame for the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities back to Tehran. He emphasized that the resolution undermines the integrity of the Board of Governors by using it to exert pressure on Iran while military aggression continues.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed concerns about its inability to verify Iran’s uranium stocks, which the agency estimates that Iran had 440 kg of uranium enriched to 60 percent, close to weapons-grade material. The resolution demands that Iran provide complete information on nuclear material inventories and grant necessary access to IAEA inspectors without delay.
