In a joint initiative between Cumberland City Council and the Greater Cumberland Chamber of Commerce, a celebratory dinner was hosted on October 20th to honor Small Business Month and the region’s numerous small enterprises. Notable attendees included Senator Tim Ayres, Assistant Trade Minister; Lisa Lake, Cumberland’s Mayor; and several Cumberland Councillors.
The event, held at Carnarvon Golf Club, featured a buffet and bar, with guests seated in a room offering panoramic views of the golf course. Many small business owners expressed that such events are pivotal for their success, offering networking opportunities and fostering connections. Both Cumberland Council members and the Greater Cumberland Chamber acknowledged the significance of their combined efforts in supporting and simplifying the operations of local businesses.
Mayor Lake inaugurated the evening’s official speeches, passionately emphasizing the crucial role small businesses play in Cumberland’s economy. She warmly reflected on her rapport with Senator Ayres and stressed that Cumberland’s growth is intertwined with the success of its small businesses. Her message was clear: “Shop local, dine local, and use local services.”
Following her, Immanuel Selvaraj, President of the Greater Cumberland Chamber of Commerce, shed light on the Chamber’s mission and its commitment to charging minimal fees. He emphasized the goal wasn’t just about ROI but also about ensuring members genuinely benefit from and enjoy these gatherings. Selvaraj also highlighted future plans, including inviting business experts to events and organizing a business tour to Southeast Asia.
Senator Ayres, in his address, began by touching upon the recent Voice Referendum and its outcome. He expressed deep respect for the Indigenous communities and his optimism for future reconciliation. Senator Ayres applauded Prime Minister Albanese’s dedication, drawing attention to the Indigenous communities’ ancient trading practices to stress the significance of trade. He wrapped up his speech with a call to action for all small business owners: “As Australians, we have a duty to collaborate,” emphasizing unity and collective growth.
