According to BBC News, Manchester United failed in a deadline-day attempt to take Manchester City full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri on loan and were also unable to complete a move for Leicester City midfielder Louis Page.

United had been seeking to strengthen what they viewed as a weakness in Michael Carrick’s defence during the latter stages of the transfer window. After deciding not to pursue Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde or Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, the club checked whether a deal could be done for Algeria international Ait-Nouri with fewer than 12 hours before the deadline.

United sources said the club did not want a permanent deal. They were told City’s only acceptable arrangement would be a loan with an obligation to buy, which United rejected. City sources said Ait-Nouri would remain at the club. The 25-year-old, who joined City from Wolves for £31m in June 2025, has been an unused substitute in all three of their games so far. He is behind Josko Gvardiol and Nico O’Reilly in Enzo Maresca’s left-back options.

Ait-Nouri started 12 Premier League games and made 31 appearances overall in his first City campaign. His decision to stay also means 19-year-old Harry Amass will not leave United on loan. Amass had been expected to consider offers after missing Carrick’s squads for both Premier League matches, though he is likely to be third choice after Noussair Mazraoui replaced Luke Shaw in Sunday’s 5-2 win against Ipswich.

United also did not secure Page, 18, despite interest first reported in August. He was named in Leicester’s starting line-up against Plymouth, before sources confirmed the move would not be concluded. Leicester wanted well in excess of £10m for Page, who made his first-team debut in August 2025 and has made 25 appearances. United had been expected to loan him back to Leicester after spending more than £150m on international midfielders this summer.
