JUBA, South Sudan – The University of Juba has officially launched a free beginner-level Chinese language course, enrolling 124 students and staff members as part of efforts to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation between South Sudan and China.

The programme was inaugurated on Thursday at the university’s Senate Hall by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Isaac Cleto Rial.

The initiative has attracted participants from the University of Juba, Upper Nile University and Stafford University, with 88 students and 36 staff members registered. Among the participants are senior professors and university management officials.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Professor Rial encouraged participants to embrace the opportunity, emphasising the importance of learning foreign languages in an increasingly interconnected world.

He noted that acquiring Chinese language skills could open doors to further education, international scholarships, professional development and career opportunities.

Professor Rial also expressed his personal interest in enrolling in a future course, stressing that learning is a lifelong process regardless of academic qualifications or professional status.

He encouraged all participants, including senior academics, to approach the programme with dedication, humility and a willingness to learn.

The course is being delivered in collaboration with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, reflecting the growing partnership between the university and Chinese institutions.

Professor Rial expressed appreciation to the Chinese Embassy for its continued support of higher education in South Sudan, particularly through scholarship opportunities that have enabled South Sudanese students to pursue studies abroad.

He also highlighted other areas of cooperation, including a recent football match sponsored by the Chinese Embassy and initiatives supporting students with disabilities.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor urged participants to maintain regular attendance, observe punctuality and demonstrate commitment throughout the programme to achieve meaningful progress in their language studies.

The initiative represents another step towards expanding international academic cooperation and equipping South Sudanese students and professionals with additional communication skills that could enhance their educational and employment prospects.
