The United States has initiated new military strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile sites and boats attempting to place mines. The US Central Command stated these actions were taken in “self-defense” to protect American troops from threats posed by Iranian forces.

According to BBC News, Central Command spokesperson Capt Tim Hawkins emphasized that the US military is committed to defending its forces while exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire between the two nations.

Iran has not yet issued a formal response to the strikes. However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai mentioned that while some progress has been made in negotiations to end the conflict, a deal is not imminent. The implications of the recent strikes on potential peace agreements remain uncertain.

Following the strikes, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that a deal could still be achievable, highlighting ongoing discussions between Iranian officials and Qatar’s prime minister. Rubio remarked on the complexity of the negotiations, which involve specific language in the proposed agreements. He reiterated President Donald Trump’s desire to make a good deal.

The strikes occurred near Bandar Abbas, a significant Iranian port city and home of an Iranian naval base that sits on the Strait of Hormuz. Local reports indicated that explosions were heard in the area, prompting investigations by Iranian officials. Earlier clashes between Iranian and US naval forces had raised tensions in the region, but Trump had previously insisted that a ceasefire was still in effect. The ongoing negotiations reportedly involve discussions on extending the ceasefire and addressing Iran’s nuclear program, although contentious issues remain unresolved.
