One person has been killed by projectile fragments after United States-Israeli strikes targeted a location close to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The agency, citing confirmation from Iranian authorities, stated that there was ‘no increase in radiation levels’ after the attack on Saturday. According to Al Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the repeated bombings of the Bushehr facility, claiming it had been targeted four times since the conflict began on February 28.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed ‘deep concern’ over the incident, emphasizing that nuclear sites or their nearby areas should never be attacked. He reiterated a ‘call for maximum military restraint to avoid risk of a nuclear accident.’ The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) confirmed that an auxiliary building was damaged, but the main sections of the power plant remained unaffected.

In response to the attack, 198 Russian staff members were evacuated from the Bushehr plant. Alexei Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom, indicated that the evacuation was planned prior to the strike. The Bushehr plant is Iran’s only operational nuclear power facility and is located in Bushehr city, home to 250,000 people.

In addition to the incident at Bushehr, US and Israeli strikes targeted several petrochemical plants in the southern Khuzestan region, injuring at least five people. Iranian media reported that explosions and smoke were observed after missiles struck various locations, including the Bandar Imam petrochemical complex. The extent of the damage from these strikes is still unclear.
