Tommy Schaefer, known as the ‘suitcase murderer’, has been deported from Indonesia after serving 11 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, on the resort island of Bali. Schaefer was convicted in 2015 alongside his then-girlfriend Heather Mack, who was also involved in the crime.

According to BBC News, the couple conspired to kill Wiese-Mack in order to access a $1.5 million trust fund. The gruesome details of the case revealed that Wiese-Mack’s body was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase, which was left in the boot of a taxi. The taxi driver alerted authorities, leading to the couple’s arrest.

Schaefer, who was 21 at the time of the murder, received an 18-year sentence, while Mack was sentenced to 10 years. Mack’s shorter sentence was attributed to her lesser role in the crime and her pregnancy during the trial. She was released in 2021 and subsequently arrested in the U.S. on charges related to the murder, receiving a 26-year sentence.

After his release on Tuesday morning, Schaefer expressed remorse for his actions, stating, “I’m sorry. I’m always sorry. I take full responsibility for everything I have done and I hope Sheila’s family finds peace.” He is expected to face federal charges in the U.S., with a court appearance scheduled in Chicago on Thursday.
