According to BBC News, the White House said the US will lift some of its 50% tariffs on Canadian goods from 30 October, describing the move as part of efforts to protect US economic prosperity and national security.

The exemptions cover plywood sheets, some paper products, certain machinery and refrigeration equipment, and certain packing crates and boxes. The White House said those items would be replaced on the tariff list by certain valves, carpets and waste products, among other goods.

The administration said the action reflected President Donald Trump’s efforts to defend American workers, ensure fair trade and offset what it called the burden on US commerce from Canada’s discriminatory treatment.

Republican Senator Susan Collins had announced the exemptions before the White House statement, saying they would help Maine’s agricultural industry. She said she had secured relief for products crucial to blueberry, potato, apple and seaweed producers, including equipment and packaging materials that may be unavailable from US suppliers or costly to replace.

The announcement follows an escalating US-Canada tariff dispute after trade talks collapsed during the summer. Trump said Canada was working hard on a trade deal, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada remained open to a mutually beneficial agreement but was prepared to wait for a proper deal.
