Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) is encouraging pubs and clubs across NSW to prepare for a busy Anzac Day long weekend with increased patronage expected.

Anzac Day is a solemn day and marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

Two-up is played on Anzac Day, 25 April, as it was played by Australian soldiers during World War One. While venues do not require a permit to host two-up, they must ensure the game is conducted in its traditional format and put appropriate measures in place to safely manage increased patron numbers and the risks associated with alcohol service and gambling.
It’s also essential that all advertising and promotions connected to Anzac Day comply with liquor promotion guidelines.

L&GNSW Executive Director of Regulatory Operations Dimitri Argeres said inspectors will be active across metropolitan and regional NSW on 25 April.

“Anzac Day is a deeply significant occasion when Australians come together to remember and reflect,” Mr Argeres said.

“With the commemorations marking the beginning of a long weekend this year, many pubs and clubs will experience higher patronage throughout the day.

“Venues must remain vigilant in managing the risks associated with alcohol service, intoxication, crowd numbers and gambling, particularly during peak periods.

“Our inspectors will be out across the state to ensure venues are serving alcohol responsibly and meeting their obligations under NSW liquor and gaming laws.”

Liquor & Gaming NSW encourages venue operators to familiarise themselves with the rules around two-up and Anzac Day trading, and to ensure staff are briefed ahead of the busy commemorative period.

There are no specific liquor trading restrictions under the Liquor Act 2007 on Anzac Day. Normal liquor trading applies. However, restrictions do apply to trading hours and conditions under the Retail Trading Act 2008. Further information can be found on the Liquor & Gaming NSW website: www.liquorandgaming.nsw.gov.au
