A young adult who appeared in hundreds of child sexual abuse images and videos has been identified after internet safety experts recognized her school uniform. According to BBC News, the girl, who was around 13 years old at the time of the abuse, was groomed into creating explicit content through online interactions.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) first encountered her image in 2020, but lacked the means to locate her. Recently, an analyst known as Mabel identified the young woman after spotting her school badge in a new batch of images sent for analysis. Despite the nature of the new material being not illegal, Mabel recognized the girl and began to search for clues.

Mabel described her determination to find the victim, stating that the girl’s face had come up so many times over the years that she “just stuck in my head”. After zooming in on the school emblem, Mabel contacted the police, who were able to reach the young victim, who had previously not reported her grooming or abuse.

The police confirmed that the young woman was receiving help and expressed gratitude for the ongoing efforts to remove abusive materials from circulation. This case highlights the challenges of identifying victims in the realm of online child sexual exploitation, particularly with the rise of AI-generated content.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) reported that nearly 37,000 child sexual abuse image crimes were logged by UK police last year, urging tech companies to improve safeguards against the sharing of explicit content involving minors.
