The Victorian government is reportedly poised to announce it will cancel plans to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Premier Daniel Andrews and two senior ministers with Games-related portfolios have called a media briefing for 9.30am on Tuesday.
The ABC and other organisations are reporting that the state government has decided not to go ahead with the $2 billion Games, which were to be hosted across regional Victoria. Mr Andrews is expected to confirm that the Games will be axed rather than merely postponed.
Funding issues are believed to be the reason.
Tuesday’s announcement comes about 18 months after Victoria made a solo bid for the 2026 event.
