The Victorian Liberal Party is in turmoil following an assault allegation made by MP Moira Deeming against her colleague Matthew Guy. The incident reportedly took place during a community event in Sunshine on May 23, prompting police to launch an investigation. According to The Guardian, sources close to Guy assert that he vehemently denies the accusation and is contemplating legal action.

CCTV footage of the alleged incident has been reviewed by Guardian Australia. Victoria police confirmed that they are investigating reports a man assaulted a woman at the function last month, which was reported to police on June 16. Although the woman involved did not require medical attention after leaving the scene, the investigation is ongoing, and police believe that the individuals are known to each other.

Opposition leader Jess Wilson stated that it would be inappropriate to comment on the matter while it remains under police investigation. She emphasized the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence for those involved. Wilson has been focused on restoring trust in the party as the state election approaches.

Attorney General Sonya Kilkenny has called for Wilson to answer ten questions regarding the allegations, including the appropriateness of a member in the party room while under police scrutiny. Premier Jacinta Allan also urged Wilson to provide clarity on the situation, stressing the seriousness of the allegations as they relate to the party’s leadership.

With the state election just five months away, this incident adds pressure on Wilson, who had previously worked to stabilize the party after years of internal conflict. The Liberal Party now faces challenges not only from within but also from rising opposition, including the surging One Nation party.
