According to Cnbc, Volkswagen’s supervisory board has approved Future Plan 2030, a restructuring programme that includes cutting around 50,000 additional positions, including management roles. The company said the plan is intended to address global competition, changing demand and technological shifts.

The new reductions add to 50,000 job cuts already approved, bringing planned job reductions to 100,000. Volkswagen described the 12-initiative programme as the most strategically profound transformation in the group’s 89-year history and said it will streamline leadership through a flatter hierarchy.

Volkswagen shares rose 8% on Friday, topping the Stoxx 600, after investors welcomed the cost-cutting measures. The shares were still down 21% since the beginning of the year. The carmaker also plans to simplify its model portfolio by 50% by 2035 and is considering alternative uses for four German plants where future production had not been secured from 2031 to 2034.

Chief Executive Oliver Blume said Volkswagen would invest a three-figure billion sum over the coming years to strengthen its brands and competitiveness. The company reported tariff expenses of 2.9 billion euros ($3.4 billion) for the full year of 2025, while Blume said in August that tariffs on vehicles from Europe had risen from 2.5% two years earlier to 15%.

Analysts said the decision could have wider implications for German auto manufacturing. Deutsche Bank analysts called approval of the plan a fundamental breakthrough and a better-than-feared outcome, while Carmignac’s Kevin Thozet pointed to pressure from Chinese competition, lower-priced imports and excess capacity in Europe.
