According to BBC News, Demi Vollering won the final stage of the Tour de France Femmes to become the race’s first two-time winner. The Dutch FDJ-Suez rider finished the nine-stage race in 30 hours, 54 minutes and 51 seconds.

Vollering began Sunday’s 99.2km mountain stage in Nice with an eight-second overall lead after winning the penultimate stage and taking the yellow jersey from Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney. The finale included four ascents of the Col d’Eze and 2,100m of climbing.

On the final climb, Vollering pulled clear of Polish Canyon-SRAM rider Niewiadoma-Phinney before increasing her advantage on the descent. She won the stage in 2hrs 44mins 43secs, with Paula Blasi finishing 1min 4secs behind and Niewiadoma-Phinney recorded at the same time.

Niewiadoma-Phinney finished second overall, 1min 18secs behind Vollering, while Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini was third at 4mins 29secs. Vollering and Niewiadoma-Phinney maintained their records of reaching the podium in every edition of the race.

“I’ve never won wearing the yellow jersey before,” Vollering said. “It’s not only the dream to win in yellow here, to win a second Tour de France, but it’s the dream to live this life, to work hard together with people with a lot of passion.”
