According to BBC News, Christian Wade equalled Chris Ashton’s Prem try-scoring record with his 101st score as Newcastle Red Bulls secured their first league win of the season, beating Sale Sharks 17-3 at Kingston Park.

Wade crossed in the right corner nine minutes into the second half after Newcastle chose the corner rather than a shot at goal. Josh Hodge converted to put the hosts 7-3 ahead, then added a penalty after Sale were penalised for entering from the side.

Sale’s only points came from England fly-half George Ford, whose first-half penalty gave the visitors a 3-0 interval lead. The match was played in blustery conditions and featured few clear opportunities, with kicking, penalties and defence dominating the contest.

Newcastle extended their advantage shortly after the hour when George McGuigan scored from the back of a maul. Hodge converted to complete the 17-3 result, leaving Harlequins as the only team yet to win a Prem match this season.

Newcastle coach Dan McFarland said he was “buzzing about the performance”, praising his side’s effort, physicality and resilience. On Wade, McFarland said: “He knows how to find the tryline, which is what all good wingers do.”
