According to BBC News, Wales won Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s team sprint at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome after beating England in the final.

Emma Finucane, Rhian Edmunds and Lowri Thomas recorded a new Commonwealth Games record of 46.760 seconds against England’s Katy Marchant, Sophia Capewell and Rhianna Parris-Smith.

Wales had posted the fastest qualifying time before securing gold. The result improved on the bronze medal won by the same Welsh trio in Birmingham in 2022.

The victory was Team Wales’ 18th medal, taking its total to three gold, six silver and nine bronze. It was Wales’ third track-cycling medal on the opening night, following silver for Para-cyclist James Ball and guide Matt Rotherham, and bronze in the women’s team pursuit.

Wales’ men’s team sprint trio of Lewis Oliva, Steffan Lloyd and Ioan Hepburn did not contest the bronze-medal race. Hepburn reached the start line but withdrew after medical advice, and Trinidad and Tobago were awarded bronze.
