According to ABC News, Australia defeated South Africa 42-38 in Perth after holding on through a chaotic late spell in which the Wallabies were reduced to 11 players. The victory came against the world champions and followed a pulsating Test in which the home side led 42-24 before the final minutes.

Referee Andrea Piardi issued four late yellow cards to Wallabies players. Harry Wilson was shown yellow after contact with Malcolm Marx was reviewed, while Ryan Lonergan was carded for offside play as South Africa received a penalty try at the scrum. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii was then sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, and Hunter Paisami received another yellow following a review of his attempted tackle on Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

South Africa closed in as Morne van den Berg scored to make it 42-31 and Ox Nche crossed at the 80-minute mark, with the conversion cutting the margin to four points. The Springboks were attacking after the full-time siren, but an obstruction penalty allowed Australia to kick the ball into touch. Wilson returned after the final try, and the Wallabies finished with 12 players after playing much of the final five minutes with 11.

Wallabies coach Les Kiss called it “a bizarre finish” but said the first 60 minutes were an important step in controlling and attacking the game. Captain Harry Wilson said his side had implemented its game plan during the first 70 minutes, while Springboks captain André Esterhuizen said Australia had capitalised on South African errors and that discipline hurt his team in the first half. Australia’s next matches are back-to-back Bledisloe Cup Tests in Auckland on October 10 and Sydney on October 17.
