According to Cnbc, a growing number of affluent Chinese are considering renouncing their nationality to obtain foreign passports. China does not recognize dual nationality, so nationals who acquire foreign citizenship must give up their Chinese passports. Advisors say interest is being driven by scrutiny of offshore wealth, tax concerns, geopolitical uncertainty and the desire for international mobility.

Beijing introduced measures in July targeting offshore trusts, with certain income and transactions potentially subject to a 20% tax. Ryan Lin, director at Singapore-based Bayfront Law, said he has seen more wealthy Chinese considering renunciation since then. Armand Arton, CEO of Arton Capital, said some clients are prepared to give up Chinese citizenship to hold multiple passports, depending on their lifestyle and business needs. Experts noted that renunciation does not automatically remove tax liabilities tied to historical gains.

The Caribbean has become a leading option for people seeking citizenship rather than residency. Antigua and Barbuda offers citizenship-by-investment programs for eligible applicants making qualifying investments or contributions. Manish Tibrewal, co-founder of Farro Capital, said Caribbean citizenship can potentially be secured within six months. Savory & Partners reported a 33% rise in Chinese client inquiries since July, while Global Citizen Solutions recorded an increase of nearly 40% from the same period last year.

European destinations are drawing interest mainly through residency routes. Portugal’s golden visa offers residency through qualifying investments and a possible longer-term citizenship path, while Hungary offers long-term residency through qualifying investments starting at 250,000 euros ($290,000). Italy is attracting families through tax arrangements for qualifying new residents, international schools and financial services infrastructure.

Singapore remains appealing because of political stability, wealth management services, international schools and proximity to mainland China. Other destinations cited by advisors include Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Argentina, Serbia, North Macedonia and Bulgaria. Advisors cautioned that exploring residency, building a passport portfolio and relocating a family are different decisions, and interest does not necessarily result in completed renunciations or moves.
