Arabic version: استقالة ويس ستريتينغ تزيد الضغط على كير ستارمر
UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from his position, increasing the pressure on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to step down. According to ABC News, Streeting announced his loss of confidence in Starmer following the Labour Party’s disastrous performance in recent local elections, where they lost almost 1,500 council seats.
Streeting’s resignation is viewed by many as a prelude to a leadership challenge against Starmer. The Prime Minister, who won a landslide election less than two years ago, is now facing mounting calls from party members to resign. Many Labour MPs and unions are eager for a debate about the party’s future direction rather than internal conflicts.
In his resignation letter, Streeting criticized Starmer’s leadership, stating, “Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift.” His comments reflect widespread dissatisfaction within the party regarding the government’s failure to address key issues like economic growth and living standards.
Former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner, another potential leadership contender, has also indicated her readiness to participate in a leadership contest if Streeting initiates one. She has expressed her concerns about Starmer’s leadership and has called for a more progressive agenda, particularly regarding economic policies.
Starmer has vowed to resist any leadership challenge, warning that such a contest could lead to chaos within the government at a critical time. With more than the required number of MPs publicly calling for his resignation, the situation within the Labour Party has become increasingly precarious.
