According to ABC News, a whale carcass washed up on Perth’s City Beach on Monday, prompting authorities to issue multiple shark warnings for the popular swimming location. Local surf lifesavers found the carcass that morning and raised the alarm, while a small crowd of onlookers gathered at the beach.

Authorities had not confirmed the whale’s species or size. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development warned that the carcass could continue to attract sharks close to shore along that stretch of coast. It advised people to exercise additional caution and to follow any beach closures.

The SharkSmart website issued several alerts after sharks were spotted at City Beach. Two white sharks, measuring 5 metres and 4 metres, were seen 10 metres offshore about an hour after the carcass was found. A Surf Life Saving helicopter also reported a 3.5-metre shark of unknown species, while another unidentified shark measuring 2.5 metres was seen circling 10 metres offshore.

The Town of Cambridge, which is managing the carcass, was contacted for comment. The warnings came 10 days after swimmer Greg O’Neill was fatally attacked close to shore at Sorrento beach, about 15 kilometres north of City Beach. Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis issued a catch-and-kill order for the large great white involved, but the shark was not found.
