Sydney has again missed out on being listed as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

The prestigious listing of liveable cities, published annually by the Economist Intelligence Unit, once again sees Sydney drop off the top 10 list while Melbourne makes the top 10 – again.

Sydney has not made the top 10 list since 2019 while Melbourne has had a foothold on the global ranking ladder every year since 2011.

It’s time for the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government to answer the question on why Sydney keeps missing out on being listed in the top 10 liveable global cities.

According to the ranking index, Melbourne has beat Sydney on culture and environment.

The 2022-23 NSW Budget Outcomes Statement says:

“Performance against [the Sydney Liveability rating in the culture and environment category] remains challenging as New South Wales continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Melbourne went through a harsh, longer pandemic lockdown and still manages to beat Sydney on the culture and environment scores.

Sydney is Australia’s pre-eminent city.

The NSW Liberals promised to make NSW No. 1 but after nearly 12 years of their government, Sydney is no longer able to crack the top 10 of the world’s most liveable cities.

The Economist Intelligence Unit assigns a ranking for over 30 factors with a scoring range of 1 (intolerable) to 100 (ideal) across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

It ranks 173 cities.
