According to BBC News, the 2026-27 Premier League season could produce a more unpredictable title race after recent campaigns in which Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal won by margins of at least seven points. Managerial change, Arsenal’s injury concern and major transfer activity are among the factors that could reshape the contest.

Five of the traditional big six will begin the campaign with a different manager from the one in place at the start of last season. Enzo Maresca has replaced Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, while Xabi Alonso is Chelsea’s new head coach and Andoni Iraola has taken over at Liverpool. Michael Carrick and Roberto de Zerbi also arrived at Manchester United and Tottenham respectively during last season. Arsenal are the exception, with Mikel Arteta still in charge.

Arsenal, the defending champions, face an extended absence for defender William Saliba after he suffered a back injury while on World Cup duty with France. Saliba made 50 appearances in all competitions last season. Since his Arsenal debut in 2022, the club have won 68.7% of Premier League matches in which he played, compared with 47.6% when he was unavailable. Arsenal face Aston Villa and Chelsea in two of their first three league fixtures.

Manchester United’s return to a heavier schedule could also be significant. They played 40 matches in all competitions last season, their fewest in a campaign since 1914-15, and finished third. Chelsea and Tottenham, who will not play European football next season, may benefit from lighter workloads after difficult league campaigns. United have added midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while Chelsea and Spurs have spent heavily in the transfer market, adding another element of uncertainty to the new season.
