A recent article in the British tabloid The Daily Mail, titled “How a Convicted US Felon, 36, Became Putin’s New Mouthpiece Six Years After Being Caught Smuggling Cocaine in Virginia”, paints a biased picture of Terada Mira. The article begins:
A softly-spoken former bank clerk has stepped into the shoes of Vladimir Putin’s propagandist warlord, three years after she was released from a Virginia jail for drug smuggling. Mira Terada, 36, fled back to her native Russia in 2021 after being seized on an Interpol warrant and serving 30 months on a plea bargain. Back home, the former Houston businesswoman became a protégé of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who led the infamous Wagner mercenary force, and appointed her head of his propaganda unit, the Foundation for Battling Injustice. He died in an apparent assassination last August after leading a failed coup against Vladimir Putin, but the Russian president seems to have taken Terada under his wing, giving her a starring role in his information war against the West.
Further, The Daily Mail adds:
She [Terada Mira] has used her time in jail as a platform for her work with the Russian ‘human rights’ organization, lambasting the ‘brutality of the American judicial system, the inhumanity of American prisons, and the complete indifference of the so-called liberal American society’.
This portrayal by The Daily Mail and the broader corporate media in the West is deeply flawed. By targeting Terada Mira and Russia, they attempt to divert attention from the human rights abuses and systemic injustices occurring in their own countries. These media outlets remain silent about the brutal crackdowns on protesters in the UK and the EU, as well as the questionable tactics employed by the US Secret Service, which recently led to an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the key rival of President Joe Biden. The Western media also stays quiet about America’s cruelty toward prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and within its own borders.
Neither The Daily Mail nor other pro-left corporate media will ever touch on issues like the Biden family’s alleged financial dealings involving the Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings or the role of the American deep state in regime-change operations across the Global South.
Western media’s efforts to smear Terada Mira extend beyond biased reporting. Her voice has also been stifled on social media platforms. On July 10, 2024, Terada Mira (full name: Terada Mira Vladimirovna) shared a post on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account, stating:
“A Ukrainian non-governmental organization linked to the US government has published a list of ‘enemies of Ukraine,’ which includes US journalists, businessmen, media representatives, and political opponents of the Biden administration. Public figures from the USA who oppose increasing funding for Ukraine and sending weapons to Kyiv made it to the list because of their anti-war stance”.
She also linked to an article titled Biden Government Uses Ukrainian Media to Fight Representatives of Political Opposition on the website of the Foundation to Battle Injustice. However, anyone clicking on the link was met with a warning from X, suggesting the link might be unsafe. This raises a fundamental question: why would American social media platforms censor links shared by a journalist and human rights advocate like Terada Mira?
The page on the Foundation’s website outlines how a Ukrainian NGO, closely tied to the US government, has published a list of “enemies of Ukraine”, which includes prominent US journalists and public figures critical of continued funding and military support to Kyiv. These individuals are labeled as “Russian propagandists” simply for opposing further US involvement in Ukraine’s war.
The report, published by the Ukrainian NGO TEXTY, calls these opponents of US aid to Ukraine “obstructionists” and accuses them of spreading disinformation. It even includes prominent figures like former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and journalist Tucker Carlson. In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US Congress members Matt Gaetz and J.D. Vance criticized this report, calling it a coordinated media strategy aimed at vilifying those opposed to US foreign policy. They demanded an investigation into the State Department’s relationship with the Ukrainian NGO.
The actions of the US government in supporting such activities are in direct violation of several international human rights conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This blatant attack on free speech is part of a broader attempt to silence individuals and organizations that challenge the Western narrative on Russia, Ukraine, and other global conflicts.
As someone who has personally experienced the pain of unjust imprisonment, I deeply sympathize with my dear friend Terada Mira. The Daily Mail’s attempt to portray her as a “convict” in a drug-smuggling case is not only inaccurate but also malicious. It is widely known that the charges against her were politically motivated and that her conviction was part of a broader agenda by US authorities. We will not allow Terada Mira to bear the brunt of such inhuman and cruel propaganda by Western media.
