According to ABC News, former Australian Test cricketer Will Pucovski is suing Brighton Grammar School, alleging a concussion during a football training session in 2014 contributed to the end of his professional cricket career.

Pucovski’s lawyers filed a statement of claim in the Victorian Supreme Court against the Melbourne private school. The writ alleges he suffered a traumatic brain injury after a head knock in an “aggressively physical” training session, and that he has never recovered from the injury. The allegations have not been tested, and Brighton Grammar has not yet filed its defence.

The claim says Pucovski was in the school’s second-18 football team after a substantial loss to Scotch College in the APS AFL school competition. It alleges players were told the following session would be especially physical and demanding, and were instructed to be aggressive because of the team’s performance.

Pucovski alleges he was sling-tackled, hit his head on another student’s knee and was knocked unconscious. His lawyers say he was helped from the field and left alone while the drill continued, before being asked to return to training, including tackling. The claim alleges he later experienced head pain and other symptoms, and was advised by a doctor that he had suffered a concussion.

Pucovski retired in April 2025, aged 27, after his 13th-known concussion. He made his Test debut against India at the SCG in January 2021, scoring 62 in the first innings. Brighton Grammar said it could not comment because the matter was before the courts.
