WIN Network has announced its acquisition of Nine Darwin, expanding its broadcast operations into the Northern Territory under a five-year agreement. This development comes just over a year after Nine scrapped its local news bulletin in Darwin, opting instead to air Queensland news. According to ABC News, the deal remains subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, which is expected by the end of May.

The acquisition has prompted mixed reactions among former employees of Nine Darwin. While some express cautious optimism that the new ownership could revitalize the local newsroom, others are skeptical about the potential for a significant increase in locally produced news content. Former TV executive Rob McKnight remarked that the acquisition price of $500,000 reflects the challenges facing the television industry, particularly in the wake of the streaming era.

WIN Network’s chief executive, Andrew Lancaster, stated that the acquisition strengthens their presence in the market, which now includes three of Australia’s capital cities. He emphasized the importance of Darwin as a vibrant market and expressed commitment to delivering Nine’s national content to viewers in the Top End.

The transition will involve transferring all local employees from Nine to WIN, although it remains unclear if WIN will continue with the existing programming model or reinstate a local news bulletin. The WIN Network has assured audiences of a seamless transition and continuity of service as they prepare to take over operations in Darwin.
