According to ABC News, Ross Tighe has rejected a defence suggestion that Queensland cattle farmer Darryl Valroy Young was not at the gate where an alleged shooting occurred at his Bogie property on August 4, 2022. Young has pleaded not guilty in a Supreme Court trial in Townsville to three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Young is accused of using a rifle to shoot four family members who attended the gate for a meeting. The charges concern the deaths of Tighe’s brother Graham Tighe, mother Maree Schwarz and stepfather Mervyn Schwarz, as well as the alleged attempted murder of Ross Tighe. Defence lawyer Anthony J Kimmins told jurors Young never saw the Tighes or Schwarzes that day and asked them to consider whether another person had a motive to kill.

During cross-examination, Kimmins suggested Young was not at the front gate at about 8am. Tighe raised his voice and said, “he was there”, before adding, “Darryl was at the front gate.” The court also viewed photographs of Tighe’s shirt and the driver’s seat of a car he said he drove while wounded. Asked about the lack of a bullet-entry hole in the shirt and blood in the car, Tighe said: “Entry holes aren’t really that big — it didn’t bleed that much.”

Tighe confirmed he had made a civil claim against Young for injuries he said he suffered. The court heard evidence about Tighe’s history of drug use, past charges, financial circumstances and messages with a former partner who cannot be named for legal reasons. Tighe finished giving evidence on Wednesday. The Townsville trial is expected to run for three weeks and continues.
