According to ABC News, a 25-year-old woman died after a wave knocked her into the ocean while she was rock fishing at Point Upright near North Durras Beach, north of Batemans Bay, on Saturday.

Emergency services were called about 6pm after reports of two people in the water. Police believe the woman had been fishing from rocks with a 39-year-old man when the wave swept her into the surf.

The man entered the water in an attempt to reach her but was unable to do so and was washed onto nearby rocks. Paramedics treated him for minor lacerations to his arms and legs.

A passing recreational fishing vessel found the woman in the water and brought her ashore. CPR was performed, but she could not be revived and died at the scene. Police said neither person was wearing safety equipment.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief operating officer Phil Ayres said the death highlighted the dangers of rock fishing and the importance of life jackets. Under NSW law, fishers in declared high-risk areas must wear a life jacket or face a $100 on-the-spot fine, though Eurobodalla Shire is not currently listed as a declared area. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
