According to Cnbc, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the Trump administration may never reach a deal intended to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week,” Wright said there may not be a nuclear agreement and that Iran’s capabilities could instead be destroyed.
Wright said an agreement could await Iran’s next administration, adding that the United States did not know whether that would occur. He said the U.S. was degrading Iran’s capacity to develop nuclear weapons and to deliver them, while working with regional allies. On CBS’ “Face the Nation,” he said President Donald Trump preferred a negotiated settlement rather than a military solution unless it was absolutely necessary.
Wright also said the military’s biggest regional role was stopping exports of Iranian crude, crude-related products and natural gas. The U.S.-Iran conflict has entered its seventh month and has sent energy prices higher worldwide, while a U.S. blockade of Iranian oil exports has disrupted flows. Iran had exported 90% of its crude through Kharg Island before the war.
Iranian parliament speaker and top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran’s “proportionate responses” to U.S. attacks were over, but warned that future violations of Iran’s interests and security would receive a “faster, heavier, and more painful” response. His remarks followed U.S. strikes on three Iranian crude oil carriers, which CENTCOM said were retaliation for ballistic missiles launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps toward two Navy warships.
Ghalibaf also cited severe exchange-rate fluctuations, inflation, unemployment and market-management challenges. Separately, the Treasury Department announced sanctions against a small Turkish investment bank and two subsidiaries accused of facilitating funds for an arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, part of broader measures targeting Iran’s access to digital assets, technology procurement, gold reserves, aviation and shipping.
