Arabic version: القتال في اليمن يتركز على باب المندب
According to Al Jazeera, Yemen is experiencing a major military escalation on its western coast and near the Bab al-Mandeb strait. Operation Yemen’s Dawn, launched by forces loyal to the internationally recognised Yemeni government, has advanced towards the strait and is confronting reinforced Houthi positions. Clashes are continuing in parts of Dhubab District and around Dhubab Airport.
The area has drawn attention because Bab al-Mandeb holds strategic importance for global trade and energy flows. The source says control of the coastline, islands and nearby highlands can provide surveillance and deployment advantages and create threats to maritime traffic. It cautions, however, that retaking coastal positions would not by itself secure the strait or end threats to navigation.
Houthis could retain the capacity to launch Red Sea attacks even if they lose positions on the coast, the article says, citing missiles, drones, launch platforms, supply networks and the ability to operate from other locations. Military challenges may also intensify as operations move into the Kahbub Mountains in Lahj governorate and highlands west and south-west of Taiz governorate.
Recent statements by Dr Rashad Al-Alimi, president of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, indicate an objective extending from containing the Houthi threat to restoring state institutions and liberating Sanaa. The article says progress depends on unified command, supplies and coordination among military formations, including the Southern Giants Brigades, which have played an effective role in coastal fighting.
The next phase will depend on whether government forces can hold retaken positions, secure roads and the area around the strait, and address threats from the highlands. If advances stall and Houthi missile and drone counterattacks continue, the source warns that the conflict could become a prolonged war of attrition with humanitarian and economic consequences for Yemen and the wider region.
