Elliot was assigned female at birth but came out as trans at age 15. His journey to self-acceptance began during his early teenage years when he grappled with feelings of isolation and confusion regarding his gender identity. According to SBS News, Elliot described feeling like he was lying to those around him during high school, navigating the pressures of gender binaries in a private, religious school environment.

From ages 10 to 15, Elliot felt trapped in a state of gender limbo, unable to relate to either girls or boys. He noted that the inadequate sexuality education and some staff’s homophobic and transphobic attitudes further exacerbated his feelings of neglect and misunderstanding. As he approached his teenage years, the discomfort with being referred to as “she” intensified, leading to a significant decline in his mental health.

Elliot reflected on the societal pressures that forced him into a cycle of self-hatred and confusion. He recalled thoughts of wishing for a third gender option and feeling safer by keeping his true self hidden. The turning point came when his family’s move to Victoria became the breaking point and catalyst for his coming out at 15, supported by his parents, and began accessing gender-affirming treatments that helped him feel more in control of his identity.

Since coming out, Elliot has experienced a profound sense of authenticity and acceptance. He emphasizes the importance of understanding and empathy in discussions about transgender health care for youth. He believes that despite differing opinions, the well-being of children should be a shared concern. Elliot hopes for greater awareness and education about the experiences of transgender individuals, advocating for the need for understanding and support for young people questioning their gender identity.
