The inquest into the death of Clare Nowland concluded on May 15, 2026, with emotional testimonies from her family highlighting the tragedy surrounding her case. Clare Nowland, a 95-year-old woman with dementia, died in Cooma Hospital a week after being tasered by former police officer Kristian White in May 2023. According to ABC News, her daughter Jenny Jordan addressed the Coroners Court, expressing the family’s ongoing distress and their feelings of injustice regarding the officer’s actions.

During the inquest, details were revealed about the circumstances leading to the use of the taser. Nowland was reported to be wandering her aged care home with knives when first responders arrived. Despite being asked to drop her weapon, White deployed his taser just three minutes after arriving at the scene. This decision resulted in Nowland falling and suffering fatal injuries, leading to White’s conviction for manslaughter in 2024.

Family members attended the inquest, wearing pins featuring a photo of Nowland, underscoring their commitment to seeking justice. Coroner Teresa O’Sullivan acknowledged the family’s powerful presence and emphasized the importance of preventing similar incidents in the future. She stated, “Every single person involved in this inquest has one goal: to try and prevent this from happening to any other elderly person, any other person with dementia and their family.”

The inquest also explored the training provided to first responders in handling dementia patients, with testimonies from paramedics and police officers discussing the need for better planning in such critical situations. The coroner is expected to release her findings later this year, which may lead to recommendations aimed at improving protocols in aged care facilities and emergency response situations.
