According to ABC News, the US Senate has confirmed David Brat as the next United States ambassador to Australia, ending an almost 20-month vacancy in the Canberra post. Brat, President Donald Trump’s pick, is a former economics professor and Republican who served two terms in the US House of Representatives.

Brat gained prominence in 2014 when he defeated then-House leader Eric Cantor in a Republican primary as part of the conservative Tea Party faction. He has a master’s degree in divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and has most recently held roles at Liberty University in Virginia. He is known for Christian nationalist views and has supported Trump’s tariffs and economic agenda after previously developing a reputation as a free-market economist.

At his Senate confirmation hearing in May, Brat identified critical minerals, commercial diplomacy, defence cooperation and partnership in the Indo-Pacific as priorities. He said he wanted to build on Australia’s opening of its market to US beef and seek a “level playing field” for other US exports. He also said he would pursue investment links with Australian superannuation funds and go “full steam ahead” on AUKUS.

Brat’s confirmation came on the same day that Trump announced the Pentagon would invest $560 million in a critical minerals project in a small NSW town. The conditional loan gives the Pentagon a right of first offer on the mine’s scandium output. Brat has pledged to execute a $13 billion critical minerals agreement signed by Trump and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese late last year.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia shared Brat’s priorities on critical minerals, defence cooperation and Indo-Pacific partnership, and that the countries would strengthen their alliance. Nationals Leader Matt Canavan welcomed the appointment, while US analyst Bill Wyman criticised Brat as an “undiplomatic person” and a MAGA political bomb thrower. Brat succeeds Caroline Kennedy, who served as ambassador from 2022 to 2024.
