According to The Guardian, Erin Patterson has begun an appeal against her convictions more than a year after a Victorian jury found her guilty of murdering three relatives of her estranged husband and attempting to murder a fourth at a beef wellington lunch. The 51-year-old watched the hearing by video link from the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre women’s prison and did not speak.
The Director of Public Prosecutions is also appealing Patterson’s sentence, describing it as “manifestly inadequate”. Ian Wilkinson, the sole surviving lunch guest, attended the courtroom. He told media that he offered forgiveness to Patterson, saying he was no longer her victim and that she had become “the victim of my kindness”.
Elsewhere in Australian news, the Sydney Swans said they were “embarrassed and ashamed” after five players were stood down for a breach of standards. Bushfire authorities also urged people in the Northern Territory, New South Wales and Queensland to prepare early. Other developments included the resignation of a First Nations MP from the Northern Territory parliament and an Icac hearing involving a Catholic schools chief.
