When a young Norma Smith walked into Padstow Library for the first time more than 60-years-ago, she had no idea she would be sharing more than just a good book, but also making lifelong friendships.
Now, as Mrs Smith reflects on a lifetime of stories and memories at her favourite place, it’s also fitting that she celebrates her 90th birthday the same day the library turns 65 (Thursday 17 October).
“I’ve been coming to Padstow library for decades now, and each year I get through about 100 to 125 books – all of different genres and themes,” Mrs Smith said.
“I’m lucky because the staff here at Padstow always go out of their way to source books that are hard to get, so I never feel like I’m missing out on a good story.”
Mrs Smith said she didn’t know if it was her love for reading that drew her to Padstow Library, or just mere coincidence, but she is happy to share the milestone.
“To be able to spend my birthday surrounded by books and the wonderful staff at Padstow Library will be a lot of fun,” she said.
“People may come and go over the years but the staff here are always so supportive and make everyone feel welcome.
“Celebrating my birthday with them will be like spending the day with family.”
Padstow Library and Knowledge Centre’s birthday celebrations on Thursday 17 October will begin from 10.30am with a shared morning tea, followed by story time and face painting for the kids, chair yoga and birthday bingo.
There will also be a special guest talk by A Trek of Faith author Maureen Martin at 6pm.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek is encouraging locals to join Mrs Smith and Library staff as they celebrate the special day.
“This is a wonderful milestone for Padstow Library and the amazing staff and residents who enjoy our incredible facility every day,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“Join us on Thursday October 17 for a fun day packed with activities to celebrate the memorable occasion.”
